1. Tokyo Restaurant for Local Workers Asks Foreign Tourists to Avoid Lunchtime Visits
On November 20, 2025, a nationwide restaurant chain in a Tokyo business district—known for its budget-friendly, everyday menu for local workers and residents, Fuji Soba, —posted a notice at its entrance asking foreign tourists not to visit during lunchtime.

1-1. Consideration for Others in Japanese Culture
Japan has many restaurant chains that offer inexpensive, down-to-earth meals popular among local customers. The restaurant in question specializes mainly in noodle dishes such as udon and soba, while other chains focus on Western-style fare, tempura, sushi, ramen, and more.
These restaurants are especially busy at lunchtime, when nearby office workers come for meals they enjoy for both taste and price.
Japanese people generally place great importance on consideration for others. At such restaurants, it is normal to finish your meal quickly—usually within 15 to 20 minutes—and free up your seat for the next customer. After eating, many people go to a café or return to the office and enjoy coffee while chatting with colleagues.
In most countries outside Japan, however, meals—whether lunch or dinner—are leisurely occasions to enjoy conversation for an hour or two. Little thought is given to those waiting for a table. This is not a bad thing; it is simply the cultural way meals are enjoyed.
Foreign visitors in Japan often follow this same custom during Japanese lunchtime, which does not match local expectations and sometimes leads to frustration among Japanese diners.
Such prolonged stays can disrupt the quick lunch routine of hardworking Japanese businesspeople. As a result, many locals cannot enjoy their usual affordable lunch, and restaurants may lose revenue.
If you are a foreign visitor who wishes to enjoy these inexpensive and tasty restaurants, it is best to avoid the peak lunch hours of 11:30 a.m. to around 2:00 p.m.
1-2. Do Not Carry Large Suitcases Around
Another major issue involving foreign tourists in Japan is dragging large suitcases through tourist areas, business districts, residential neighborhoods, trains, and buses. Carrying such bulky luggage is considered extremely inconsiderate in Japan, and Japanese people avoid it entirely.
Large suitcases should be left at your hotel or stored in a coin locker. Japan has many coin lockers in a wide variety of sizes.
From the perspective of a nationally licensed tour guide, those who most often carry large luggage around are Chinese tourists, possibly because they do not trust the safety of coin lockers. In their home country, coin lockers may be of poor quality and unreliable.
This posted notice received many “likes” on social media in Japan. Comments included:
“Great decision!”
“Local customers should come first.”
However, there were also critical opinions such as:
“It just looks exclusionary.”
”Please visit outside lunch hours’ would sound gentler.”
The restaurant removed the notice the following day.
2. 東京のレストラン、外国旅行者に昼食時に来店遠慮要請

東京のビジネス街にある庶民的低価格メニューを”売り”にしている全国チェーン・レストラン『富士そば』が2025年11月20日、ランチ・タイムに外国人の旅行者が来店しないよう要請する張り紙を店頭に掲出した。
2-1. 日本人の他人への思いやり
日本には同店のように、低価格帯の庶民向けメニューをそろえたレストラン・チェーンがいくつもある。同店はうどんやソバなど麺類が中心である。このほか洋食系、天ぷら系、寿司系、およびラーメン系と多彩である。
このような店は、近隣のサラリーマンには味と価格が人気があり、ランチ・タイムには大いににぎわう。
日本人は基本的に、他人への思いやりがいつもあるので、このようなレストランでのランチは、15分から20分くらいでサッサと自分の食事をすませ、他の客へ席を譲るのが普通だ。食事後は、喫茶店へ行ったり、事務所へ帰ったりしてコーヒーなどを飲みながら、仲間と談笑する。
基本的に日本以外の国では、食事は、それがランチであれディナーであれ、1時間も2時間も十分時間をかけて談笑しながら楽しむ。席が空くのを待っている人のことなどへは、少しも考えが及ばない。それは別に悪いことではない。食事は、そのようにして楽しむものなのだろう。
日本への外国人観光客は、その習慣を日本のランチ時のレストランでも同様にするので、日本の習慣とは合わない。日本人に疎まれる。
勤勉でまじめな日本人のクイックなランチを邪魔することになるのだ。そうした外国人観光客のために、多くの日本人ビジネスパーソンは、そこでの美味しいランチを食べられなくなる。レストランも売り上げが伸びない。
もし、外国人観光客であるあなたが、そのような安くて美味しいレストランで食事を楽しみたいなら、11時30分から14時くらいまでのランチ・タイムを外したら良いだろう。
2-2. 大きなスーツケースは持ち歩かない
訪日外国人観光客のもう一つの大きな問題は、観光地やビジネス街、住宅街、電車内、バス内を問わず、大きなスーツケースを引きずり回すことである。そんな大きな荷物を持ち歩けば、どこでも他人へ大いに迷惑が掛かるので、日本人は絶対にしない。
大きなスーツケースは、ホテルへおいてくるか、コインロッカーへ預けるのがよろしい。日本にはいろいろなサイズのコインロッカーがたくさんある。
全国通訳案内士の経験からすると、こんなことをするのは、主に中国人観光客である。コインロッカーの安全性を信用できないらしい。自国では、コインロッカーに品質が粗悪で信用できないからだろうと思われる。
この張り紙については、SNSで多くの日本人が「いいね」をした。
「素晴らしい対応！」
「地元客最優先で良い」
と賞賛する声が上がった。
またいっぽう、
「ただ単に排他的なだけに見える」
「『昼食時間外に来て』の方が優しく聞こえる」
といった意見も散見した。
同店では翌日、その張り紙を取り外した。
